Low Back Pain

One of the most common reasons people visit physicians is due to lower back pain. Low back pain is often caused by straining the back. Back strains can usually be treated with anti-inflammatory medications, ice and heat therapy and pain medications. Ultram is a prescription analgesic that can be effective for treating low back pain.

Sitting Properly To Prevent Lower Back Pain
Sitting improperly can cause lower back pain, especially if sitting for extended times. When sitting at the computer or a desk, the chair should have a straight back and knees should be positioned so they are slightly higher than the hips. If the chair is not adjustable, using a stool may help keep knees in proper position. Always sit straight, without slouching and when turning, use your entire body.

Standing Properly To Prevent Lower Back Pain
When standing for prolonged times, this can place strain on the lower back, resulting in pain. An effective way of preventing this is by simply raising one foot and resting it on a low stool and switching feet every 5 to 15 minutes. For standing properly, shoulders, hips and ears should be aligned, with stomach in and head up.

Best Sleeping Positions to Prevent Lower Back Pain
The best position for sleeping is on the side with knees bent and placing a pillow under the head for supporting the neck. Placing a pillow between the knees can help keep the back aligned properly. When sleeping on your back, a pillow should be placed under knees with another small pillow placed under the lower back. Avoid sleeping on the stomach without positioning a pillow under hips. Mattresses should be firm for proper support. If the mattress is soft, placing a board under the mattress will provide additional support.

Tips to Prevent Back Strain
* Using proper body mechanics can prevent back strains from occurring. When lifting objects, use the knees and hips instead of bending over. The back should be kept straight and the object should be held as close to the body as possible. When turning, turn the whole body instead of twisting the back.
* Avoid wearing high heels. Wear shoes that have flat or low heels.
* Maintain proper body weight. When overweight, excess weight can place pressure on the lower back.
* Avoid sitting for extended times. Take time to get up and stretch often.
* Exercise regularly. This can help to strengthen back muscles, helping to prevent injuries.
* Do not smoke. Smoking can raise the risk for arthrosclerosis, which can lead to degenerative disc disorders and lower back pain.
